Since October 17, 2023, a European ban on microplastics has been in effect. This encompasses all synthetic polymer particles smaller than 5 mm in size that are organic, insoluble, and non-biodegradable.
Many glitters contain such microplastics. Glitters on an object fall under the ban when they are not an integral part of it. These glitters can easily come loose and therefore may no longer be placed on the market. There is no transitional period for this use.
Glitters that were already placed on the market or imported into the EU/EEA before October 17, 2023, may remain in commerce, provided they can be demonstrated as such. Glitters that are biodegradable, soluble, natural, or inorganic are not covered by this ban and may therefore be placed on the market.
Bureau REACH played a significant role in achieving consensus. The European Commission softened the ban in 2024.
